Virtual Calibration

Virtual calibration enables to optimize the performance and efficiency of vehicle systems, particularly those related to the chassis (ABS, ESC, Torque vectoring, Active suspension) and powertrain (engine, transmission, etc.). Instead of relying solely on physical testing and tuning of calibration parameters, virtual calibration leverages computer simulations and modeling techniques to tune and OPTIMIZE the parameters of various vehicle systems.

  • Model Development: Detailed mathematical models of the vehicle are created using CarSim, CarMaker, or using the in-house developed vehicle dynamics model. These models simulate the behavior of each component and system under various operating conditions.
  • Simulation Setup: Using specialized software tools, virtual test scenarios are created that represent real-world driving conditions, such as highway cruising, urban stop-and-go traffic, or performance driving. They define inputs such as vehicle speed, throttle position, and road grade to simulate different driving situations.
  • Parameter Optimization: Calibration parameters in the control algorithm are changed. This combined with its integration with virtual models allows to optimize the performance. This may involve fine-tuning factors such as ignition timing, fuel injection timing and quantity, transmission shift points, and torque converter lock-up strategy.
  • Validation: Once the virtual calibration process is complete, final validation can be performed using physical testing. This reduces the amount of time and effort in calibrating complex control systems.

Plug-&-Play Framework

Caliber Technologies has developed ‘plug-&-play architecture’ that allows to change the ‘control system’ as well as ‘vehicle model’ in various forms as the vehicle development progresses. This architecture allows continuous validation and verification of the control systems. This was implemented to validate various Active chassis and powertrain control features virtually.
